Câu này nói về hai điều khiến người ta ngại ngần, khổ sở hoặc chịu nhiều lép vế: bị quan trên giấy gọi hầu và sống nương nhờ bên nhà vợ. Thường dùng để diễn tả cảnh bị động, mất tự do, dễ bị coi thường hoặc phải chịu nhiều áp lực.

This proverb refers to two situations people traditionally found especially intimidating or humiliating: being summoned by officials and living dependently in one’s wife’s family home. It is used to describe a condition of helplessness, lack of freedom, or having to endure pressure and disrespect.
